Design Brief
A 1930s townhouse in Queens was in need of major updates when purchased by a busy family of four. The husband, a chef and restauranteur, wanted a kitchen large enough to work in while also entertaining family. The kitchen opened into the home’s original dining area which meant that we had to give it a modern update while preserving the original style of the house.

The Process
Demolition began by bringing down a portion wall separating the dining room and kitchen. Inside the wall the contractor discovered a set of pipes that would be costly to move, so we revised the design to include a column at the end of the kitchen island.
Before
In order to blend the homes existing details with a new kitchen it was important to choose materials and finishes with care. We decided to use a combination of mixed metals and matte finishes so that the kitchen would look modern but not stand out as brand new. This gave the space a soft “lived in” look which blended well with the rest of the home.
Using recycled cabinets from an outdated luxury kitchen proved challenging but worth the effort. The cabinets were made of solid wood and came accompanied by several additional storage accessories such as wooden pull outs. The character and quality of these cabinets allowed us to use them in the kitchen and entry where they were repainted and used as entry storage.
